Miami, Oklahoma was typical small-town America back in the 60’s. Population about 10,000. Everyone worked at the B.F. Goodrich plant. Corner groceries were scattered all over town. Everybody knew each other.
But in 1969, the town received an unprecedented blast of fame, glory, and pride. Local boy Steve Owens won the Heisman trophy, playing for the beloved Oklahoma Sooners.
Today’s FamilyFirst pick celebrates the year Steve won it all.

It’s a beautifully penned piece by sportswriter David Pietrusza. Pietrusza is a nationally-published writer who has also written books on sports and history.
His piece on Owens beautifully captures the man’s humility. Wouldn’t it be great f we could return to the days when a football player would modestly spike the ball after scoring, or perhaps handing it to the referee, instead of going into bizarre gyrations that resemble epileptic seizures.
Owens simply did his job, and he did it well enough to win the big trophy. Read his excellent bio and see if you agree.
